Compassionate Couples Counselling in Canberra

Find Your Way Back to Each Other

Most couples don’t book counselling after one bad week. They come in after months, or even years, of having the same argument over and over, unable to break the cycle on their own. Being here doesn’t mean your relationship has failed.

At Umbrella Counselling we sit down with both of you, we don’t take sides. We work out the issues each person is facing and help you find a better way to talk to each other.

Signs It May Be Time to Reach Out

There’s no line you have to cross before couples counselling is worth it. Our Canberra-based relationship counselling supports couples at every stage, from a rough patch to a real crisis.

It may be time to reach out if any of this sounds like your relationship:

You don’t need to be in crisis to come. Many couples come simply to stop drifting.

What We Help Couples With

Every couple arrives with a different story. Our counselling starts with what’s actually happening between you:

How We Work With Couples

Couples counselling isn’t a courtroom, and your counsellor isn’t a judge deciding who was right. Our job is to slow the conversation down enough that you can both hear what the argument is really about for each of you.

Our approach to relationship counselling may include:

We work at your pace, and we won’t push your relationship toward any particular outcome.

What If My Partner Won’t Come?

This is one of the most common calls we take, one person has been carrying the worry for a long time, and the other isn’t ready or doesn’t believe counselling will help. You can start on your own, working on your part of the pattern does shift things at home, and it gives you a clearer head about what you need. Plenty of partners join later, once they can see it isn’t an ambush, and if they never do, the work is still worth doing for you.

Support at Either End of the Journey

Pre-Marriage Counselling

Coming in while things are good is one of the kindest things you can do for a marriage. We help you talk properly about the things couples usually assume they agree on: money, family, in-laws, children, faith, careers and how you each handle conflict.

Separation Support

Sometimes the most caring outcome is a separation handled with dignity. If you’ve decided to part, or one of you has, we can help you do it with less damage. That includes how you tell the children, how you’ll co-parent and how you each grieve a relationship that mattered.

An Inclusive, Gentle Space

We work with couples of all kinds; LGBTQIA+ couples, neurodiverse partnerships, blended families and couples from every cultural and faith background. Your relationship belongs to the people in it, and we treat it with respect, compassion and care.

What You Can Expect From Our Couples Counselling

One of You Has to Go First

You don’t need the right words, an agreed version of events or your partner’s permission to get in touch. Just a first conversation with someone who will listen to both of you.

Questions Couples Ask Us

It works best when you both come. Hearing both sides from the start saves a lot of time. But it isn’t a requirement. If only one of you is ready, start there and we’ll work with what you bring.

No. In couples counselling the client is the relationship, not either person. That means you both get heard properly, and neither of you gets ganged up on. If you ever feel that balance slipping, say so in the room, it’s useful to know.

There’s no set number. Some couples come for four to six sessions with a specific issue in mind, others stay longer, especially where trust has been broken. We’ll talk openly about progress as we go rather than locking you into a program.

Plenty of couples arrive convinced they’ve left it too late, sometimes the work is about repair, and sometimes it’s about understanding what happened and separating well. Either way, coming late beats not coming at all.

Yes, within the usual legal and safety limits, which your counsellor will explain in the first session. We’ll also be clear up front about how anything shared in an individual session is handled.

Yes. We see couples in our Canberra city rooms and online across Australia, which helps if you’re in different places, working shifts or juggling childcare. Some couples do a mix of both.

Relationship counselling generally isn’t eligible for a Medicare rebate. Some private health funds offer cover depending on your policy, so it’s worth checking with your fund. Our current fees are listed on the Pricing page.
